65 Patients per day? Good Health Care?

by Peter on April 29, 2010

I discovered recently that a chiropractor whom I’ve referred patients to was seeing 65 patients that day. Sixty-five! That’s approximately 7 minutes per patient! Do you think your health care is getting optimal attention in 7 minutes?

With every patient I see, I first look at how this patient is standing while my client explains their symptoms. Their posture, pelvic angles, and head and shoulder positions are very important in determining how they are opposing gravity in this moment and time. Symptoms are very important, and listening to a patient explain what has been happening for them, along with where they are in posture, gives us clues on how and where to treat. It may also be equally as important to watch their gait, how they walk, to assess the pain or discomfort they may be complaining of. Can you tell a car is pulling to the right just by looking at it standing still? No, and neither can we determine why pain is located where is is if we don’t put you into motion.

As Massage Therapists we are one of the few Health Care providers that spends time with a patient. Typically I will be with a client for 25 to 55 minutes depending on what we need to do. In this time I can assess posture and gait, give hands on treatment, use laser and light therapy, Kinesio tape if needed, and show a few exercises. And during all of this discuss any questions my client may have.

Make sure that you are getting full attention with your health care. Health providers are stretched to the max these days, myself included. However you must seek out and demand full attention for your health. Your quality of life may just depend on it.

If you have and comments or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.
